The Nearness of the Possible
An observation on the loss inherent in development
Not everything possible is already actual.
And not everything actual exhausts what might have been possible.
Between the open field of possibilities and actualized reality lies a narrowing. Something takes form. Something else is left behind. Development proceeds by selecting.
This is how world comes into being.
And this is how loss comes into being.
Open Field
Potential Space names the open field of possibilities from which actualization can emerge.
It is not a store of finished things. It does not consist of hidden objects waiting to be brought out.
Potential Space is a field of relational possibilities: open, permeable, and not fully determined.
What becomes actual from it is decided only as it takes place.
One possibility can be thought.
Another can be spoken.
A third can become action.
Many remain unactualized.
Potential Space is therefore not identical with the future. The future is expectation. Potential Space is the condition under which expectation can acquire direction at all.
Actualization as Narrowing
Every actualization is a selection.
Something becomes actual because something else does not. A decision opens one path and closes others. An action gives form and leaves alternatives behind. Development produces contour because it does not realize everything at once.
This is the loss inherent in development.
Development is therefore not only an increase. It is also a reduction. It brings world into being by limiting possibility.
Without this limitation, there would be no form.
Without form, there would be no action.
And without action, possibility would remain a space never entered.
Potential Space does not become valuable because everything remains open. It becomes valuable because reality can emerge from it.
But every reality that comes into being carries the trace of what did not.
What Is Left Behind
What was not actualized does not always disappear.
Some things do fall out of relation; some lose their force. Some become irrelevant. But others remain effective: as an open difference, an unfulfilled function, an unused capacity, a missed connection, or a missing form.
At this point, Potential Space meets Residual Tension.
Residual Tension arises where excluded possibility does not disappear completely. It is the effective surplus of what did not take form in the process.
Potential Space therefore does not lie only before the decision.
It appears again after the decision: altered, shifted, narrower or wider, and marked by what actualization left behind.
Nearness to Reality
In practical terms, Potential Space describes the range of real next possibilities.
A possibility enters this range only when it can become connectable under concrete conditions: through language, place, time, body, relation, procedure, resources, attention, protection, trust, or an identifiable next action.
Not every wish, demand, analysis, or expression of outrage opens a Potential Space.
Potential Space emerges where possibility moves close to reality.
Where:
- something becomes sayable;
- something can be entered;
- someone can act;
- a connection emerges;
- a form holds;
- a decision remains reviewable.
Expansion and Narrowing
Potential Space can open.
Then more perceptions become possible, more language, more action, more connection, and more correction. A situation is not only described; it becomes workable.
Potential Space can narrow.
Then language, procedures, relations, and expectations become narrower. People no longer see a next step. Decisions appear to have no alternative. Experiences remain outside. Images of the enemy take over the order. Images of return become stronger than present possibilities.
Narrowing does not mean only that something is prohibited.
Narrowing means that less reality can enter.
Direction under Observation
Potential Space here denotes an observable structure of possibility under conditions. It is connected to the fundamental concept of Potential Space within the conceptual system of the Permeability of Being, without presenting that concept itself.
The concept makes visible that reality consists not only of what has already found form. Reality is also shaped by what remains possible, has been excluded, or may yet find form.
That is why Potential Space is a tool of World Recognition.
It asks not only: What is?
It asks: What can still emerge from what is?
And it leads to a practical test:
Does an action open more real next possibility—or does it narrow the space?
