An observation on the loss inherent in development

Potential Space names the open field of possibilities from which actualization can emerge. It is not a store of finished things, but a relational field that remains open and not fully determined.

Every actualization changes this field. Some possibilities take form. Others are excluded, displaced, or remain accessible under altered conditions.

Residual Tension names the effective surplus of possibility that was not actualized.

It arises where a possibility is excluded, unheard, unrealized, or left without form and nevertheless continues to have an effect. It can harden, shift, undergo Densification, or enter into Reversivity. It does not demand a return. It points toward a form that is still missing in the present.

Here, a moment appears in which something cannot immediately find a connection within the existing order. Expectation and event diverge before meaning emerges or processing begins.

Irritation marks the threshold at which change becomes possible: an interruption before any decision about whether difference will be taken up, stabilized, or become structurally effective.

This text describes a form of stabilization in which criticism, truth, and participation are permitted without becoming effective.

Prohibition and repression are not required. Temporal displacement, structural decoupling, and the control of relevance regulate what can have an effect.

Here, a form of time appears in which movement takes place without opening new fields of possibility. In this present, change appears as a continuation of what is already known.

It remains capable of action by functionally extending the past.

Organizational forms in which responsibility formally exists no longer need to answer. They may no longer even be capable of answering.

Responsibility is allocated, but response is unlikely. Criticism encounters procedures, not a counterpart.

Orders initially respond to difference as isolated cases. Individual deviations are absorbed, transferred, or lose their effect. But difference rarely remains isolated. It appears repeatedly, in different places and in different forms.

Densification names the point at which these individual movements can no longer be processed independently of one another.

Orders do not exist merely because they contain elements.

They exist because processes, signs, decisions, and effects can be connected.

Connectability names the condition under which something enters an order without immediately appearing as a foreign element.

Orders do not change only where difference enters, pressure arises, or structures respond openly. They also change more quietly. Terms remain, procedures continue, and responsibilities stay in place. Yet something no longer occupies the same position as before.

Shift names this form of change, in which the position of a relation changes without a visible rupture.
