How Difference Enters Order
An observation on the entry of difference
Irritation arises when a process, a sign, or an effect does not pass into existing structures. The sequence falters. Expectation and event diverge.
Difference therefore appears at first not as meaning, but as interruption.
Something is present that must be processed before it can be placed within an order.
Irritation is therefore not a state of affairs, but an event in the relation between order and what occurs.
Difference as Event
What first becomes apparent is a temporal asymmetry.
Decisions are made at a moment when they cannot yet be negotiated publicly. Criticism, review, or correction begins later, at a point when the decision has already been transferred into procedures, contracts, or technical processes.
What is discussed only within Continuing Past loses the point at which it could intervene. It remains correct, but without consequence.
Connection under Tension
As soon as Irritation occurs, the search for connection begins.
Existing concepts are shifted, procedures are adapted, and interpretations are expanded. The order works to transfer the difference into its own structures.
Whether this succeeds is decided not at the moment of Irritation itself, but through the way it is processed.
Some Irritations quickly disappear within the structure of existing interpretations.
Others remain perceptible and change the conditions of future processes.
Threshold of Change
Irritation marks the threshold at which change becomes possible.
It shows that stability rests on conditions that are not fully controlled.
Where Irritation is taken up, Connectability changes.
Where it persists, Shift arises.
And where it undergoes Densification, the structure itself changes.
Irritation is therefore the point of entry for every later movement, regardless of whether it is rejected, integrated, or carried further.
The Perceptibility of Order
Irritation makes order visible.
Only when expectations no longer hold does it become possible to recognize what they depend on.
Irritation reveals the boundaries of what is taken for granted and opens the possibility of determining conditions anew.
Open Question
Irritation occurs before it has been decided what will follow from it.
It names the moment in which difference becomes perceptible without already having been ordered.
The question that arises concerns the transition itself:
When is Irritation taken up—
and when does it begin to change the order?
